The Chingay parade was held in Georgetown, Penang on Sunday (22nd December 2008). The procession started from Padang Brown to Esplanade wia Datuk Kramat Road, Penang Road, Burmah Road, Transfer Road, Sri Bahari Road, Chulia Street, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Light Street. This event was organised by the coorperation of Penang Chingay Association, Pesta Pulau Pinang and Wushu Lion and Dragon Dance Association. During the parade, there were lion dance, dragon dance, and the most special thing during the paradeÂ was seeingÂ the peopleÂ balacing the flag that weight about 15 kg.
For those who are wondering what is Chingay parade, well, it is an annual street parade as part of Chinese New Year festivities. It origins to a float decorating competition in Penang during 1905. This eventually associated with Chinese New Year when the practice of float decoration spread to the rest of Malaya in the 1960s.
